Denzel McCampbell Statement on U.S. Supreme Court Voting Rights Decision

DETROIT – Today, Denzel McCampbell, candidate for Detroit City Clerk, released the following statement regarding today’s decision on voting rights by the United States Supreme Court

“Today, the conservative majority of the U.S. Supreme Court continued their mission to gut the Voting Rights Act and eliminate voting rights protections for communities of color. This decision sets a dangerous precedent that will further embolden lawmakers in Lansing and across the country as they advance voter suppression legislation. Today’s decision is disrespectful to those who fought and died in the Civil Rights Movement and will harm voters of color, only creating barriers to the ballot box.

“The Voting Rights Act is the cornerstone for fair and secure elections, and this decision undermines our democracy by gutting section 2 of the law. We should be making it easier to vote, not returning to the voter suppression that has cast a dark cloud over the history of this country.

“It is time for the U.S. Senate to abolish the filibuster and pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.”
