Dear Neighbor,

We have an opportunity to transform the way we engage our neighbors around civic engagement and participation in the city of Detroit. Our city is better when everyone has the opportunity to participate and make their voices heard. There must be a complete overhaul of how we approach civic engagement and voting in the city. As Detroit City Clerk, I will ensure we implement plans to engage every resident each and every day, election year or not. Our community must see progress for their actions and engagement — we cannot afford to continue to disillusion people by bringing them in and not producing tangible changes. Young people should be engaged thoughtfully, not in a dismissive way that leaves their ideas on the cutting room floor. Our neighbors who have never stepped inside a voting booth or city council chamber must also be engaged. Representation and civic engagement do not start and stop on Election Day.

I’ve spent the last decade organizing and advocating across the state on issues that impact our daily lives. From protecting voting  and civil rights to fighting to ensure our communities have the resources they need. As an elected Charter Revision Commissioner, I’ve worked hand in hand with Detroiters to ensure that we have a city charter that is inclusive, forward-thinking, and one that centers the most vulnerable.

This people-centered approach must be embodied in every aspect of our government. As your next Detroit City Clerk, I will make sure that civic education and engagement, along with accessibility is at the core of the office.

Join me as we embark on a campaign that is rooted in transparency, engagement, accountability, creating a real democracy, and ensuring our elections are safe, secure, and accessible. This is about meeting our neighbors where they are engaging them around our city government. This is about bringing every Detroiter to the table!

Denzel’s Priorities

· Increase accessibility to the ballot box.

We must continue to expand opportunities for our neighbors at the ballot box and increase transparency in our elections. I will work to make sure we are using best practices and up-to-date technology for election administration.

· Fight back against attacks on our voting rights.

Detroit continues to be singled out by Republicans in Lansing and nationally with racist rhetoric and actions to suppress the votes of Black and brown voters. I will be a strong advocate who will build coalitions to fight back against the continued attacks on our voting rights.

· Transform civic education in the city of Detroit.

We must meet our neighbors where they are. I am committing to creating a Detroit Civic Education Corps. to be rooted in each community. Members will engage with every Detroiter around the issues that impact them and how they are connected to government. This will help increase civic engagement at the ballot box and beyond.

· Open the door to democracy in Detroit.

Detroit residents deserve to know what is going on in our city government. We must have accessible avenues for residents to get information on the happenings and functions of city government.

· Ensure self-determination for Detroiters.

Our elections must be conducted efficiently and correctly. Self-determination is key to affecting change.
