Denzel McCampbell Announces Run to Become Detroit’s Next City Clerk

Voting Rights Advocate, City Charter Commissioner wants to increase accessibility to ballot, civic education, and transparency in city government

DETROIT – On Friday, Detroit Charter Revision Commissioner Denzel McCampbell announced his 2021 run for Detroit City Clerk. The voting rights advocate shared his vision for a city clerk’s office that would work to increase accessibility to the ballot box, fight back against Lansing’s attacks on Detroiters’ voting rights, create on-the-ground efforts to increase civic education, and improve transparency within Detroit city government.

“We are currently in challenging times. Ensuring Detroiters have tools to make their voices heard is of the utmost importance,” said Denzel McCamapbell. “The City of Detroit should be doing more to increase civic education to ensure that we can participate at the ballot box and beyond. I’m running for Detroit City Clerk because I have the experience and passion to make sure we are bringing every Detroiter to the table when it comes to making these decisions.”

McCampbell, a lifelong Detroiter who lives on the city’s west side, cited his experience with engaging community members during the current three-year charter revision process and his various public service roles, including serving as Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib’s communications director. McCampbell vowed to bring a people-centered, coalition-building approach to the role.

“During my tenure as Charter Revision Commissioner, I’ve worked hand-in-hand with community members to deliver a progressive, forward-thinking revised charter. I’ve helped to spearhead efforts around water affordability, reimagining public safety, and beefing up the city’s health department. This could not have been possible without working with all of our neighbors, and I plan to do the same as we transform the city’s clerk office and civic engagement in the city,” McCampbell continued.

McCampbell also released a video online Friday morning which can be viewed here.

He plans to run a campaign rooted in direct voter contact to connect with as many neighbors as possible to garner input and support on how to expand civic participation.

The primary election will take place on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021.
